Hysteria, while seemingly no longer considered a real mental condition,
seems to me to have described a still very common mental state, one of
a sort of compulsive pretending. Rationalization is normal, but a stronger
and more pathological version of the half-conscious deception we use to
justify our acts seems to infect the world. This capacity's strange power
is the thread which runs through hypochondriacs, shamans and showmen, adolescents
associated with poltergeist phenomena, and the genies of political rhetoric
and sales.
